Question:
I can’t sleep at night because of my husbands snoring. He is 16 stone and he constantly snores really, really loudly. It has been getting worse over the last few months and it has got to the point where I am hardly getting any sleep at all. I have even tried ‘counting sheep’ but that has made no difference.
I have also noticed that my husband appears to stop breathing for periods throughout his sleep and this makes me scared to go to sleep. What can I do to get a peaceful night sleep?
Answer:
It sounds like your husband may have sleep apnoea and this causes the upper airways to collapse during the persons sleep. This will result in snoring and there will be periods where the snorer will not breathe or will have reduced breathing for as much as 10 seconds during their sleep. This will generally wake the snorer and they may sit up and gasp and then go back to snoring. Your husband’s sleep will also be affected and he could feel tired and irritable the following day. This condition is more common in middle age men who drink alcohol, smoke or are considerably overweight. It can also run in families.
It is important that this condition is taken seriously and that your husband visit’s his doctor. He will be referred for tests and treatment. This involves visiting an overnight lab where his sleep would be monitored. The usual treatment is to use a CPAP pump at night and this will pump pressurised air into the air pipes to ensure that they are kept open during sleep. In rare cases surgery or mouth splints may also be needed.
There is no cure for this condition but treating it will reduce the snoring and if you ignore it, the snoring will only get worse and that will not help either of you get a good nights sleep.
